Carlos Frenk

Mexican-British cosmologist (born 1951)

Professor Sir Carlos Silvestre Frenk is a Mexican-British cosmologist. whose research has focused on galaxy formation, dark matter and the large-scale structure of the Universe. He contributed to the development of the Cold Dark Matter paradigm and co-developed the Navarro–Frenk–White profile with Julio Navarro and Simon White. He has been Ogden Professor of Fundamental Physics at Durham University since 2001 and served as founding Director of the Institute for Computational Cosmology from 2001 to 2020. Frenk is a co-founder of the Virgo Consortium, an international collaboration that carries out large-scale cosmological simulations, including the Millennium Simulation. He has also participated in the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) collaboration and has been associated with large numerical simulation projects including FLAMINGO and COLIBRE. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2004, appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2017 Birthday Honours for services to cosmology, and knighted as a Knight Bachelor in the 2026 Birthday Honours for services to astrophysics and cosmology.
